This was my first effort at brewing a Newcastle Brown Ale (or something similar). I had a hankering for something like this, and wanted to see what I could come up with that was similar in taste and look. I used a recipe provided by my brother from one of his local brewshops. Other recipes that I had investigated often suggested making two brews, and then combining them – which sounded interesting, but was a bit beyond what I wanted to do.
Grain Bill
Maris Otter – 3.5kg
Brown Malt – 0.7 kg
Chocolate Malt – 0.2 kg
Crystal Malt – 0.3 kg
Amber Malt – 0.2 kg
Hops

Recipe
Mashed at 67 degrees celsius.
Boiled for 60 minutes

Brewing Notes
This was a bit of a disrupted brew. Firstly, the brew spent a lot of time in the fermentation tank after fermentation. Originally, I had planned to keg it, but life (and COVID-19) got in the way. I also had a few concerns regarding the kegging process. There appeared to be a white film in the conical section of the fermentation tank. And finally, I am unconvinced by the Tilt. It might need to be recalibrated. It appeared all over the place.
Tasting Notes
Good!
More fully, this tastes a lot like Toohey’s Old – but perhaps a bit sweeter, but not rougher.
