I’ve been thinking about how to attract some more native birds to particular parts of the garden (and importantly, away from deck, where they’ve been making a mess lately). While I’ve tried to scare them away with owl cut outs, and minimise the damage they cause with covers, I thought that the carrot might be more effective than the stick – so I decided that I would build a bird feeder. This was a pretty straightforward build, with two main features.
The first feature was that I designed the project on Fusion 360. I haven’t worked out how to link to that project, and to be honest, it was a pretty amateur effort, but I like the idea of practicing my 3D modelling skills at the same time as thinking with a little more design focus on building some of these things.
The second feature was that I used the chisels to scrape out the area for the bird feed. This was not an unalloyed success: I struggled to get the depth right, and in the end, I build a smaller jig and fixed a lot of it with the trim router.
As a side note, it appears to be very popular with pigeons, which I guess is a good start.
